TOEFL TEST SECTIONS

1. An Internet-based test (TOEFL iBT)

The TOEFL iBT assesses all four academic English skills: reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The Internet-based test format has gradually supplanted computer-based tests (CBT) and paper-based tests (PBT) since its inception in late 2005, though paper-based testing is still used in some areas. The TOEFL iBT test was first offered in 2005 in the United States, Canada, France, Germany, and Italy, and then in 2006 in the rest of the world, with new test centers being added on a regular basis. It is administered once a week at approved testing sites. These scores are no longer valid because the CBT was cancelled in September 2006.

Candidates had to wait months for test seats because demand was stronger than supply at first. In most nations, the test can currently be completed in one to four weeks. Those interested in taking the test can now register an account on the official website to locate a testing facility near them. This test used to take four hours. People can now take the test for roughly three hours. The test is divided into four portions, each of which assesses one of the core language abilities (although some activities require the integration of multiple skills), with all tasks focusing on academic or higher-education language. The TOEFL iBT test allows you to take notes. Starting in September 2019, the test can only be taken once every three days.

Extra, uncounted content will be included in one of the exam sections. Extra material is included by the Educational Testing Service to pilot test questions for future exam forms. When given a longer portion, test takers should give each question the same amount of effort because they don’t know which questions will count and which will be considered extra. If there are four reading passages instead than three, one of them will be skipped. The uncounted one could be any of the four.

2. Home edition

The TOEFL iBT Home Edition is almost identical to the TOEFL iBT. It is, however, done at home with a human proctor watching through a webcam (which is commonly included with most laptops) and sharing the computer screen. Because it was the sole alternative during lock-downs during the COVID-19 epidemic, the Home Edition grew in popularity. During the Home Edition tests, many students have technical or security issues. In several occasions, the ETS browser used to give the test has proved unstable.Technical problems are difficult to document, and the processing of a complaint is delayed due to the popularity of the Home Edition and the quantity of complaints, thus students who have their exams interrupted are unlikely to receive a refund or the opportunity to reschedule for a new test. Most employers and universities that recognize the TOEFL iBT standard edition accept the results if the test goes successfully.

3. Paper-delivered test

The TOEFL Paper-delivered Test is an approved test that can be used when the online test is unavailable due to internet or computer problems. It consists of three sections: hearing, reading, and writing, with scores on a scale similar to the Internet Based Test. There is no cumulative score. Because not all facilities are equipped to administer this type of test, it will almost always be necessary to reschedule the test for a later date.

4. Paper-based examination

The TOEFL paper-based test (PBT) was accessible until 2017, when it was phased out in favor of the paper-delivered test. Exam results are valid for two years after the test date, and test takers can request that their results be mailed to them.

  •  Listening (30–40 minutes) There are three parts to the listening segment. The first has 30 questions concerning brief discussions. Eight questions concerning extended conversations make up the second section. The final section includes 12 questions about lectures and talks. Questions that are more difficult are worth two points.

  • Written Expression and Structure (25 minutes)There are 15 exercises in the Structure and Written Expression part for correctly completing sentences and 25 exercises for identifying faults. Questions that are more difficult are worth two points.

  • Reading Comprehension (55 minutes)

There are 50 questions in the Reading Comprehension section about reading passages. Questions that are more difficult are worth two points.

  • Writing (30 minutes)A writing test called the Test of Written English is included in the TOEFL PBT administrations (TWE). This is one essay question with an average word count of 250–300 words.

5. TOEFL ITP Tests

TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) assessments are paper-based and employ academic content to assess non-native English speakers’ English language ability. The examinations are used for placement, progress, assessment, exit testing, and other purposes and use new and previously administered TOEFL test questions. With the exception of the TWE (Test of Written Expression), the test results, format, and content are identical to the “TOEFL PBT”.

TOEFL ITP examinations, unlike the TOEFL iBT and PBT tests, are administered by the institution and are only for internal use. It should not be used in place of the TOEFL iBT test, which is secure and contains both speaking and writing sections. TOEFL ITP has two levels: Level 1 (intermediate to advanced) and Level 2 (advanced) (high beginning to intermediate). The CEFR is used to map TOEFL ITP scores, and test takers receive a certificate of completion

Accepted TOEFL Scores

Most institutions use TOEFL scores as as one element in their admissions decisions, with certain colleges or programs within colleges requiring a minimum TOEFL score. Minimum TOEFL iBT scores range from 64 (Conservatorium van Amsterdam) to 110 (Universiteit van Amsterdam) (University of Oxford).

1. TOEFL iBT Test

On a scale of 0 to 120, the TOEFL iBT test is graded.A scaled score of 0 to 30 is assigned to each of the four categories (reading, listening, speaking, and writing). The overall score is calculated by adding the scaled scores from the four components.

After a ten-minute break, the reading and listening components are examined again. Following the break, the speaking and writing components are finished. The entire exam process can be completed in a maximum of 203 minutes.

Each speaking question receives a raw score ranging from 0 to 4, with a 1-point increment, and each writing question receives a raw score ranging from 0.0 to 5.0, with a 0.5-point increment. These results are scaled to a range of 0 to 30.

2. Paper-based Test (PBT).

The total PBT score is based on three sub scores: listening (0–68), structure (0–68), and reading (0–67) and ranges from 0 to 677. The lowest possible score is 310, which equates to 31 points each section. Unlike the CBT, the writing component’s score (known as the Test of Written English, or TWE) is not included in the overall result; rather, it is recorded separately on a scale of 0–6.

The percentage of correct answers is not the score test takers receive on the TOEFL listening, writing, and reading sections. To account for the fact that some tests are more difficult than others, the score is transformed. These discrepancies are corrected by the converted scores. As a result, the converted score reflects ability more accurately than the raw value.

The TOEFL PBT was decommissioned in May of 2017. The TOEFL PBT is increasingly used for official testing in locations without access to the internet or computers.
